Our Mission
Upasuaji International works toward thriving, self-sustaining communities in Sub-Saharan Africa by expanding access to specialized surgical care and strengthening the local healthcare providers who make lasting care possible.
Expand access to life-changing surgical care
Equip local healthcare providers to lead
Build community-centered health systems

From Dr. Balumuka
Upasuaji began from lived surgical experience in East Africa: the pressure of scarce resources, the imbalance of outside-led aid models, and the belief that healthcare solutions are strongest when local practitioners are trusted to lead.
“Improvisation wasn't just a tactic, but a way of life.”
Dr. Balumuka
Dr. Balumuka describes entering surgery in resource-scarce East Africa, where clinicians had to improvise through equipment shortages and difficult operating conditions.
Visiting medical teams brought generosity and expertise, but also exposed a painful imbalance: local practitioners were often left under-equipped and under-empowered.
Upasuaji International grew from the conviction that lasting solutions come when local providers are equipped to lead, partner equitably, and draw on the resilience of their communities.
That origin led to Healthcare-Centered Community Development: a sustainable framework that strengthens local healthcare providers while connecting care delivery to each community's needs, capacity, and long-term development.
